Chihuahua Mexico

Founded by the Spaniards over 300-years ago, Chihuahua City has come to be a beautiful and educational stop for tourist in Northern Mexico. This historic city is home to various monuments and museums that pay homage to the city’s influential. Here is a preview of some of the things you can see on your visit to Chihuahua:

1.     Plaza Hidalgo – At Plaza Hidalgo, there is a statue of the originally known spot where Hidalgo was assassinated. It was later discovered that he, in fact, was not executed there, but the statue remains as a memorial.

2.     Palacio de Gobierno – Built in 1891, this building was used to house the State Governement offices and to this day maintains that same function. Murals scatter the walls of the center courtyard, depicting life in Chihuahua from the 16th century to the 20th century. This is where, upon further research, Hidalgo actually died

3.     Rectoria de la Universidad  – When the Jesuit College was abandoned after the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767, Chihuahua no longer had a university. Fortunately, in 1826, Chihuahua’s government built an institution for higher learning where some of the most prominent figures of the 19th and 20th centuries studied.

4.     Plaza de Armas – In front of the Palacio Municipal lays the Plaza de Armas. It is a picturesque area of the city of Chihuahua, adorned with benches, gardens, and a magnificent fountain. Within the plaza also sits a statue of Antonio do Deza y Ulloa, the founder of Chihuahua.

5.     Museo de Arte Sacro – Much of the original religious art that was part of the now demolished Jesuit College went missing after the destruction. Incredibly, all of the art has since been recovered and now sits in the Museo de Arte Sacro. This museum is attached to the back of the Cathederal, which displays some of the best Baroque style architecture seen in all of Northern Mexico.
