Chihuahua City

An Important Historical City In The North,
Affording Beautiful Architecture & Lessons In History

Chihuahua was founded by the Spaniards, in October of 1709, under the name of 'Real de Minas San Francisco de Cuellar'. The name Chihuahua comes from the Nahua Indian language that means “dry and sandy” and was originally spelled Xicuauhua.

This city has a dramatic past and is renowned for the important role that it played in history of Mexico. There are many fantastic museums to visit here and an old fashioned trolley car goes around the city on an hourly basis to show visitors the sights. The downtown area around the cathedral features a pedestrian only walkway that runs for several blocks, allowing visitors to enjoy the variety of restaurants and shops.

Almost all Amigo Trails trips will include a Chihuahua City Guided Tour with a federal guide that propels one into the marvelous history of this entire state. On the city tour, one will visit Pancho Villa’s Museum, Quinta Gameros, the main Cathedral, the Plaza de Armas, Sacro Arte Museum, and the murals in the government building. Time permitting, there is also a stop at the Casa Chihuahua to see Hidalgo's Dungeon.
