Travel across the Copper Canyon and do it all on this adventurous and active trip that includes hiking in the Secret Forest in El Fuerte, kayaking down El Fuerte River where all rivers flow into from the canyons and seeing the ancient petroglyphs carved into the rock. Take the Chepe train across Septentrion Canyon, spend a night on the canyon rim in Divisadero, bike around the charming Alpine town of Creel in the heart of the canyons. The best is yet to come when you bike down the road to Batopilas, descending over 7,000 feet to the bottom of this incredible canyon and then spend another two full days biking in and around this old silver mining town. See tropical birds, amazing canyon views, old cathedrals, beautiful waterfalls and coy but friendly Raramuri Indians on this all encompassing and hands-on adventure through the Copper Canyon!

Itinerary

duration: 10 nights

begin location: Los Mochis

end location: Chihuahua

 

Day 1: El Fuerte

Private transfer from Los Mochis Airport to El Fuerte, a colonial town just 1 hour away. Hotel of your choice (View Hotel Options).

Day 2: El Fuerte 

Morning guided Kayak Tour down El Fuerte River with hike to petroglyphs. Same hotel again.

Day 3: Posada Barrancas

Transfer from hotel to El Fuerte train station. 1st class Chepe train tickets from El Fuerte to Posada Barrancas train station. Transfer to Hotel Mirador on the rim of the canyon. Afternoon free to enjoy the views on your own.

Lunch and dinner included at hotel.

Day 4: Divisadero/Creel

Morning Divisadero Area Tour to visit all the overlooks, including the seldom seen Oteros Canyon overlook, and an opportunity to ride the Cable Car into the canyon. Ground transfer from Divisadero to Creel, about one hour away, and drop off at your hotel . You'll be fitted for your bikes after checking in today and will go on a guided bike ride around the Valley of the Mushrooms, Frogs and Monks this afternoon to warm up for the more strenuous rides to come in the following days.

Day 5: Creel

Today is a strenuous bike ride to Recowata Hot Springs, deep in Tararecua Canyon. You'll travel through the canyons over single track as you make your way past Rukiraso Waterfall and finally end at the hot springs where you can soak the day away. Return to Creel via the paved road for some exhiliarting downhill sections for those of you who like speed and some tough uphill sections for those of you who like to really push yourselves.

Day 6: Batopilas

Full day tour to Batopilas today with many stops en route including;

  • Valley of the Mushrooms, Frogs and Monks
  • Lake Arareko
  • San Ignacio Mission
  • Cusarare Waterfall (you may hike to this waterfall on day 9 if you prefer)
  • Cusarare Mission
  • Loyola Museum
  • Basihuare Canyon
  • Copper Canyon
  • Batopilas Canyon

A picnic lunch of your choice (View Picnic Options) is included along the way today and you'll be dropped off in Batopilas at the end of the day to your hotel of choice (View Hotel Options).

You'll begin biking today, after stopping at many of the above listed sights, on the road to Batopilas and will get a chance to ride down the amazing switchbacks that people come from all over the world to ride. Lunch will be set up for you en route so you can get some energy back and it will be based in carbs. You'll have plenty of drinks to keep you cool too as you ride into Batopilas in the late afternoon.

Day 7: Batopilas

We'll give our tushy's a rest today so we'll be ready for the big ride tomorrow. Today you will visit the ruins of Hacienda San Miguel by bike and do a hike that passes by an old silver mine and shows you excellent views of Batopilas village from above. A hike along the old aqueduct is set for the afternoon when the tropical birds are out and at their best. Some free time in the afternoon to explore the area on your own and perhaps visit the Batopilas Museum is included.

Day 8: Batopilas

Today begins by visiting the Lost Cathedral of Satevo by vehicle, then afterwards another thrilling bike ride as you are driven by vehicle up to an incredible point in the mountains, overlooking Batopilas Canyon, along the old back roads. A Poer Lunch will be taken at this overlook and then you'll ride down yet another set of switchback mountain roads that will take you all the way back into Batopilas.

Day 9: Cusarare

Returning towards Creel today, you'll stop in Cusarare for a night at the specialty hotel, Sierra Lodge. This hotel is rustic in nature but comfortable in appointment. It includes all meals and the Raramuri Indians of the Cusarare Ejido live and work there so you'll get an up close and personal view of them without being pushy. You may hike or bike to Cusarare Waterfall today from the hotel.

Day 10: Chihuahua

Transfer from Cusarare to Chihuahua City this morning, with stop to visit the Mennonite Community of Cuauhtemoc if desired, with drop off at your hotel. The rest of the day will be spent relaxing in jacuzzi or steam room and/or swimming in one of the two pools on the property. Let your muscles unwind and order a bit of room service. You deserve it! A farewell dinner is set for tonight at the La Casona Restaurant in downtown Chihuahua City.

Day 11: Fly home

You'll be transferred to the airport today after breakfast for your flight out.
