January & February
January 6th - Three Kings Day. If you get the "monito" today in the "Rosca de
Reyes" bread, the traditions holds that you must invite your friends to eat atole and
tamales on Feb. 2nd.

February 2nd - Candelaria is celebrated on the 40th day after Christmas. This
religious celebration marks the end of the Christmas festivities observing the birth
of Christ. Candelaria commemorates the day when Christ was presented in the
temple by his parents, following Jewish practice.
Mexican families celebrate by "raising" the Christ Child figure from the nativity
scene. The Christ figures and icons are also brought to the church to be blessed.
Finally the nativity set is put away until the beginning of the next season’s
Christmas celebrations.
Some cultures marked this day as the beginning of the new year, and traditionally
brought their seed for the coming year's planting. Also candles are also brought to
the church – from this tradition comes the name "Candelaria" from the Spanish
word for candle "candela".

February 5th -  Congress finally proclaimed a new Constitution on February 5th,
1857. This Constitution declared freedom of education, freedom of the press, of
industry, of commerce, of labor and of association. The country of Mexico was
once again organized as a federal republic. It also included a chapter on individual
guarantees, and a judicial procedure known as the amparo (a writ of habeas
corpus, used to protect people) to protect these rights. The Constitution also
supported the autonomy of the municipalities. Public and Bank holiday.
March & April
This is a great time of year to visit the Copper Canyon area as there is NO
tourism here at all in this time period. The waterfalls are at their driest of the year
but if you are interested in more than just waterfalls then this is the time of year
for the lowest prices and least amount of crowds. The canyons are still not too
terribly hot, the winds of March have died down and the rains of summer have not
yet begun. Come on down!

For Mexico, Easter is a combination of Semana Santa (Holy Week - Palm Sunday
to Easter Saturday) and Pascua (Resurrection Sunday until the following
Saturday).
For most Mexicans, this 2 week period is THE time of year for vacation (good time
to not be on the highways - just stay put and enjoy the community of your choice
during this holday season).
Semana Santa celebrates the last days of the Christ's life. Pascua is the
celebration of the Christ's Resurrection. It is also the release from the sacrifices of
Lent.
In many communities, the full Passion Play is enacted from the Last Supper, the
Betrayal, the Judgement, the Procession of the 12 Stations of the Cross, the
Crucifixion and, finally, the Resurrection. In some communities, flagellation and/or
real crucifixion is included. The enactments are often wonderously staged,
costumed and acted, with participants preparing for their roles for nearly the full
year leading up to Semana Santa.
Semana Santa in the Copper Canyon-
The majority of Raramuri’s consider themselves Christians and observe most of
the holy days of the Catholic calendar. The rituals themselves, however, will vary
from community to community throughout the Tarahumara Region.
There are three fundamental aspects of the Raramuri ceremonies that influence
the Indians and which give cause to why the Raramuri  identify with the Catholic
rituals during Semana Santa.
1.) The aspect of agricultural fertility and abundance that the Raramuri have
celebrated themselves for so long
2.) The principal of unification and community identification.
3.) The social reward associated with the festival that incorporates the interaction
of all the Raramuri people into a “play” or game during the ceremonies. This in
turn provides a closeness and conviviality which is so important in the social
structure of the Raramuri.
