Destinations in the Copper Canyon
Creel is a fantastic place to hang around in for a day
or two as there is much to see in the area such as
Valley of the Mushrooms, Frogs and Monks, Lake
Arareko, Cusarare area and Divisadero. All these
places are within 45 minutes or less of Creel. Creel is
great for accommodation too as there are cheap as
well as more expensive places to stay. One should
always plan at least one full day in Creel if not a few
more, depending on what you wish to accomplish
while here.

Cusarare is 22 kms from Creel so you can get there
in about 1/2 hour driving yourself or with a private
transfer. Cusarare village, Loyola Museum and
Cusarare Mission are located very conveniently
together in the same place. The museum costs
$1.50US to enter as does the Mission (or they will
ask for a donation once you are inside). The
Raramuri are plentiful here and make arts and
crafts for sale at the store in the Museum or on the
steps of the mission.
Cusarare waterfall is across the road and a bit of a
walk from the village. The entrance to the waterfall
is actually about 3 kms BEFORE you reach the
village entrance if you are traveling from the Creel
area. You must park at the public entrance and
walk about 40 minutes or so through the woods to
get to the waterfall. There are steps that go all the
way to the bottom of the falls too if you still have
any breath left in you when you arrive.

Batopilas is an old mining village at the bottom of
Batopilas Canyon. It is a great place to visit and we
hope you won't miss it. You may get there by a bus
or van that goes daily from Creel with the
exception of Sundays. The bus returns every day
from Batopilas to Creel except on Sundays.  No
buses run on Sundays either from or to Batopilas.
You'll want to walk or drive the 8 kms to Satevo
while in Batopilas to see the Lost Cathdral. The
ruins of Hacienda San Miguel are nice to roam
about in and the old aqua duct is home to a TON of
birds such as the Trogan, Mot Mot, Squirrel Cuckoo
and Military Macaw.

Sinforosa Canyon is the 2nd deepest in the
Copper Canyon system at 1830 meters. It is also
the most narrow and because of this it is
extremely difficult to hike so if you are looking for
a challenge then this is your canyon. This canyon
is located just outside of the town of Guachochi.
Just drive down an easy dirt road for an hour and
"voila"!  you are there. Overlook point is behind a
fence and closes at sunset.
Cerocahui is a small mountain town just 1/2 hour
from the Bahuichivo train stop. It is nestled in a
valley about 45 minutes from the overlook of
Urique Canyon and village.  The town is very small
but it has a nice mission. The thing to do here is to
stay at San Isidro Lodge (so cute and great
service) for a few nights and do a full day tour to
Urique Village and back. One doesn't need to
actually spend the night in Urique. Just the trip up
and down the road is fantastic for the views.

El Fuerte is a fantastic old colonial town that sits
about an hour from Los Mochis. If you are flying
into Los Mochis (which we recommend) then you
should pay for a transfer or take a bus directly to El
Fuerte rather than spend the night in Los Mochis.
You'll enjoy your first night much more there. Try to
plan at least 2 nights there too if you can so that
you can do the relaxing River Float trip while
spotting some lovely birds on your second day.

Basaseachi Falls
This is the highest waterfall in Mexico and it's
located in Candamena Canyon, just about 3.5 hours
from Creel. There is another nearby waterfall
called Piedra Volada that is about a day's hike from
Basaseachi. This waterfall is actually taller but
since it does not have water year around, it really
can't technically be classified as the tallest
waterfall. Candamena Canyon is a very cool
canyon. It is the widest and has sheer rock walls
that are amazing to see. The expansiveness of this
canyon is what will really strike you.
Divisadero is really a train stop that overlooks
the joining of Tararecua, Urique and Copper
Canyons. This view point is likened to the views
at Grand Canyon but there is no comparison in
features by any means. It's just that you are
looking at the very tops of these canyons and
they seem endless. There are some trails along
the cliff edge where one can see the Raramuri
Ladder that is still used for ascending and
descending the canyons, the Balancing Rock,
and one can hike into the canyons from here as
well should one wish to.  There is a hotel on the
rim there and also another one about 3 kms
down the road. The prices are high as you are
paying for the view so if you can't afford that
then just stay in Creel and do a day trip up there
in one of the Amigo Trucks or even a Scooter.
It's only one hour away from Creel.
